A quiet natural space in the industrial section of Sunset Park, Bush Terminal Piers Park is a lovely waterfront park with spectacular views of the area’s tidal pools and the Bay Ridge Channel. This site, once a port complex, was cleaned up and opened as a public park in 2014. The park is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitors to the park can enter at 43rd Street, and walk along the waterfront esplanade past the tide ponds and restored wetlands. Visitors will find two multi-purpose soccer and baseball fields as well as a nature preserve that allows a fun glimpse into Brooklyn’s wild side.

Bush Terminal Park, located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, is a waterfront oasis transformed from a former shipping pier. This eight-block-long green space features tide ponds, sports fields, and stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks along the esplanade, admire the restored wetlands, or play a game of soccer or baseball on the multipurpose fields. The park also serves as a habitat for various wildlife, providing a unique urban nature experience.

Context


Bush Terminal Piers Park is a hidden gem in the industrial heart of Sunset Park, offering a peaceful, natural escape with stunning views of tidal pools and the Bay Ridge Channel. Once a bustling port complex, the site was transformed into a public park in 2014, after an extensive cleanup.

Open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., visitors can enter at 43rd Street and stroll along the waterfront esplanade, passing restored wetlands and serene tide ponds. The park features two multi-purpose fields for soccer and baseball, along with a nature preserve that provides a glimpse into Brooklyn’s wilder side.

Although the park is tucked behind a wall of industrial buildings, separating it from the residential area of Sunset Park, it still draws locals for a variety of events and activities. A major highlight is the robust soccer programs, with local academies and clubs using the park as a training ground for all ages. On weekends, high school and community leagues fill the fields with soccer and baseball games.

Yet, sports are just one of the reasons people are drawn to Bush Terminal. It’s a space where residents come to unwind whether jogging along the pier, relaxing on the grass, or sitting on a bench to take in the waterfront views with a good book. Bush Terminal Piers Park offers not only beautiful scenery but also a vital sense of peace and community connection.


























History

Bush Terminal: A Brooklyn Industrial Giant

Bush Terminal was once a bustling industrial powerhouse in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1902 by Irving T. Bush, it became the largest multi-tenant industrial property in the United States. The terminal’s innovative design, which integrated rail, water, and truck transportation, revolutionized the way goods were handled in the city.

A History of Industrial Might

Early Years: Bush Terminal began as a small operation with a few warehouses and a pier. However, Irving Bush’s vision quickly transformed it into a massive industrial
complex. He built warehouses, factories, and a private 
railroad system, making it a self-contained industrial hub.

World Wars: During both World War I and World War II, Bush Terminal played a crucial role in supporting the 
American war effort. It was used for manufacturing, storage, and shipping military supplies.

Post-War Decline: The decline of manufacturing in the United States and the rise of container shipping led to a decline in the terminal’s importance. Many of the factories and warehouses fell into disuse.

Revitalization: Industry City

And while Bush Terminal’s industrial heyday may be over, its legacy lives on through Industry City. The complex serves as a reminder of Brooklyn’s rich industrial past and its ongoing transformation into a thriving cultural and economic hub.

Sustainability Initiatives: As part of its commitment to sustainability, Industry City will continue to invest in energy-efficient upgrades and environmentally friendly practices. The goal is to create a sustainable and resilient community.

  Spatial Planning Precedents I’ve learned that it’s important to provide 3 key design elements when creating educational spaces: community, comfort, and choice. Studies have shown that our traditional ways of designing typical schools and classrooms limit the child’s education, their choice of how they want to learn, and even their well-being. This is why we must break away from these traditional spaces and look to design more unconventional spaces that allow students to make their own choices on how they want to learn, what type of setting they wanna be in, and allow programs to merge to help build a community within the school that as a result encourages socialization among peers and a sense of belonging.
